day four: kelley

Welcome!  If you’re wondering what all the 31 hubbub is about.  Read this.

31 days wide

Kelley Delene Thornton.  Isn’t that the coolest middle name?  It is the same as her paternal grandmother’s middle name (although it is the name her grandma went by).

kelley

I first met Kelley in 2007 when I was in the same small group with her at MOPS.  I got to know her a little bit, but it was my first year in a new town and, well, it takes me awhile to get to know people.  The next two years of MOPS we were in the same group and on the leadership team together.  And we both were pregnant with our 2nd.  We have older boys the same age and our second born children are also both boys.  Then I had my third and 9 months later she had her third and fourth (yes twins!).  So little by little, being in MOPS together, doing story times at the library together and going to another mom group, we just got to know each other better and now she is one of my closest mom friends.

I was not too excited about moving back to my home town, but I prayed that God would provide me with friends that I could relate to.  I think having a friend is one of the fastest ways to make a place feel like home.  But it can be really scary to put yourself out there and try to connect with others.  Let’s face it, I can be a weirdo and kind of a crazy person (but only crazy good and weird good, I promise).  Kelley is down to earth, kind, patient and the kind of person that really listens.  She made it easy being friends.  God definitely answered that prayer!

Kelley grew up in Bluffton and went to Norwell High School.  She then went on to Butler University (but I don’t hold that against her) and then got a job in Bluffton as a pharmacist.  She now is a pharmacist in Fort Wayne.  Do you know how handy it is to have a druggy friend when you are a mom of young kids?  And I mean that in the best possible way 🙂

Um, Kelley, What is this medicine for and do they really need it?

Um, Kelley, all of the cough medicines are for kids 4 and older.  What do I do now?

Um, Kelley, can I give them Motrin and Tylenol?

Um, Kelley, ……?

I promise I like her for more than her helpful knowledge!  And, hey, after all of my questions, she still answers the phone when I call so I guess she’s not too annoyed 🙂

While our middle children were in story time at the library a few days ago (and in between chasing her twins), Kelley sat with me and answered a few questions.  We tried solving the age-old problem of, “How can twins be the best of friends but when running go in completely opposite directions?”, but decided my questions would be a little easier to answer.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Have you ever done a personality test?  “I’m a first born…and I think an ISTJ.”  See, I’m an INTJ….and we still get along seeing as how she is a rule follower and, well, I would follow the rule if I thought it was a rule worth following.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?  “a veterinarian.  but I didn’t like blood.  So when I went to college, I picked pharmacy because I liked math and science.  After seeing different procedures done at work, blood doesn’t bother me any more.  I’m the only one in my family that can handle it.  But I’m still glad I don’t have a job where I’d have to deal with it every day.”

Where were you 10 years ago?  “newly married, living in Ossian and working in Bluffton.”  Ok here’s the crazy thing with Kelley and me.  We were married in the same year, both went to Florida on our honeymoons and both went to Boston for our one year anniversary.  Alright it might not be that crazy.  But we thought it was a little bit because not very many people go to Boston for their one year anniversary.  We blame our sports loving husbands.

What was your favorite vacation?  “my honeymoon to the florida gulf shores.  It was by the water, I love seafood and we went parasailing.”  Parasailing–how fun!

What vacation has exceeded your expectations?  “both florida trips over spring break.  2 days in the car with 4 kids and they did great.”

What is your current hobby?  “reading.  After the kids are in bed, I can just rest, relax and escape.”  The best hobby in my opinion 🙂

Tell me something interesting about the last movie you watched.  “Do you want to know the last movie I watched?”  A kid’s movie?  “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.  I enjoyed it probably better than the first one.  And it was the first movie that three out of four kids stayed in their seats.”  (every mom knows that IS huge.)

What’s your favorite song right now?  “10,000 Reasons”

She later told me that 10,000 Reasons is her favorite song, but she also loves the veggie tales theme song because every time her kids hear it, they all start singing it.  And she hears them from where ever they are all over the house.  Love that 🙂

What book are you reading right now?  The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen and Elementary, My Dear Watkins by Mindy Starns Clark”

What has been your most life changing moment?  “the day we did in vitro for the twins”  Kelley and her husband had her first two boys via in vitro fertilization.  They felt they were still responsible for the rest of their embryos and so they decided to become pregnant for a third time.  Two babies at one time is definitely life changing.  All people with twins just yelled a loud AMEN!

Finish this sentence:

Before I die, I want to “live to be a grandparent.”  I get that.  They say it is a ton of fun!

So that is a little about my good friend, Kelley.  Do you know Kelley?  What is a cool thing about her that you love?

Do you have a person in your life that helped you through a tough transition—moving to a new town, getting a new job, having little babies?  What do you love about that person in your life?

And come back tomorrow to meet, as my children call her, Miss Cindy.
