day ten: rachel

Welcome!  If you’re wondering what all the 31 hubbub is about.  Read this.

31 days wide

This post is not about me.  Do not be confused.  You might not realize it, but there is more than one Rachel in the world.  I understand if you get confused.  I mean, we get confused so why shouldn’t others.  Have you ever called someone on the phone who has the same name as you?  “Hi Rachel, it’s me.  I mean you.  No.  It is definitely me.”  Or, I don’t know, go to email someone and actually email it to yourself by accident.  Or go to write the person’s name on a piece of paper and write yours instead.

So I just want to reiterate.  This post is not about me.  It is about this other girl named Rachel.  I met this Rachel a few years ago at Mom Life.  Then she joined my book club and we had a chance of becoming great friends but she dropped out after only one month.  Rachel, I promise I don’t hold it against you.  And then I practically ruined any chance of being friends we might have had by a little incident involving a little bit of taco dip, a medium length car trip and a large amount of, well, vomiting.

But then she started a late night girls Bible study and I bravely joined it.  I figured I would force her to be my friend.  We live on the same street and we both have girls the same age and we both are named Rachel….that sounds like the foundation for a great friendship to me!  If she feels stalked, she hasn’t let on.  And she hasn’t kicked me out of her house, yet.  Even though some nights after Bible study we are there past Cinderella’s curfew.

But really, Rachel is a delightful person that I have known for only a short while but I hope that our friendship continues to grow.  She is a lot of fun to be around and she has one of the sincerest hearts I know.  She is actively seeking God’s will in her life.  She refuses to settle for complacency.  She loves the Lord with her whole heart and it shines forth from her big smile and her bubbly laugh.  Rachel is one of those people who you can talk to and she offers really good advice—so much so that you feel as if you should pay her for her wise counsel (she Was a counselor for 3 years before deciding to stay at home with her babies full-time).

Her full name is Rachel Kay Draper and she also has a blog where you will find her honest and heartfelt thoughts.  She has a little girl and boy and one little guy on the way.  She and her husband went to high school together but didn’t start dating until she was in college.  She said they were at the same Christmas party and he was flirting with her but it was really awkward because she thought he had a girlfriend.  She was talking to a friend and found out he didn’t!  They then dated for four and a half years and have now been married for about five and half years.  She lived in the same house her whole life and then moved to the house she is in now when she was married.

And so I sat down with Rachel at her home and I asked her the usual questions.  Here is what she had to say.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?  “a veterinarian.  by high school, I wanted to be a counselor.”  Obviously, she has a large amount of compassion.  You would have to for either of those jobs.

Where did you go to school?  “Bluffton and then Huntington University and transferred to Ball Sate”  Why the transfer?  “I didn’t feel like Huntington offered as wide a variety….In the end, I’m glad I did since I got a minor in women’s studies.  I wouldn’t have been able to get that at Huntington.  But I love Huntington…I went back there for my masters.”

What were you doing 10 years ago?  “I had started college at Huntington.  Joel and I started dating in December.”

Have you ever taken a personality profile?  (I knew she had since she’d had us take one in Mom Life)  “yes but I don’t remember it.”  what?!  “well I know that I’m an E, except for when I’m pregnant, I’m an I”  why is that?  “I just tend to get a little more down and withdrawn near the end of my pregnancies.”  Oh so you’re saying Introverts are depressed?(I was totally kidding with her.)  “hahahahha…noooo!”  I think what she meant is that she just prefers to be alone and not throw lavish parties in her third trimester.  Maybe that’s a good thing 😉  She emailed me later and said she took the test (again for at least the 5th time in five years) and she’s an ISFJ.

Tell me something interesting about the last movie you watched.  “It is called The Impossible.  It is about the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand.  It helped me realize how easily you forget about the things you see on the news.”  It is so true.  I think we forget news stories by the next day…or even the next hour.  And most stories are life changing for the people involved.

What book are you reading right now?  “The Bible and I just started reading a baby name book.”  I love baby name books.  And I love hearing the names people choose for their children.  Can’t wait to hear what baby #3 will be named!

What is your current hobby?  “baking desserts”  What is your favorite thing to bake?  “cookies.  I limit myself to making them only on Sundays.”  (I think she should bake as much as she desires!  And if there are extras…I only live a few blocks away 😀 )  Do you have a favorite recipe?  “yes I’ll email it to you.”  And she did!  these rolo cookies and these caramel stuffed apple cider cookies look Delicious!  And she added a recipe for what she calls “the best cookies ever.”

Our favorite add-ins are butterscotch chips OR chocolate chips with caramel bits and topped with sea salt fresh from the oven: ‘salted caramel chocolate chip cookies’
1/3 c. shortening
1 c. butter, softened
1 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
Cream all these ingredients together
3 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
Stir in chips of choice, form into balls and bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes!

What has been your favorite vacation?  “my honeymoon.  we went to the dominican republic.  most people who I tell that to respond with ‘oh I went there for a missions trip.’  Not us!  We didn’t leave until the day after our wedding and as I’m packing my suitcase Joel tells me that I’m packing too much.  We hadn’t even been married 12 hours and he was telling me this!  So I take out some of my stuff and we get to the airport and my suitcase was under the weight limit by about 2 pounds.”  Cracks me up!

What vacation has exceeded your expectations?  “every trip I go on with Joel.  I have so much fun that I want to go back.”

What is one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?  “I didn’t really grow up with ‘classics’.  Like I didn’t watch Little House on the Prairie and I only recently watched Wizard of Oz and I haven’t seen Anne of Green Gables.”  These are such TRAVESTIES!!!  We really Must watch Anne of Green Gables very very very soon.  And now I’m wondering if you’ve ever seen Newsies?

What is your favorite song right now?  “Church Bells by Gungor”

What has been your most life changing moment?  “having both of my kids”

Finish this sentence.  Before I die, I want to “have a really big family and leave some sort of legacy for my family.”

So that is just a little bit about my friend Rachel….who is not me.  And just to keep you on your toes, come back tomorrow to read a little bit about my friend Bekah…who is not this friend Bekah.
