day thirteen: tracie

Welcome!  If you’re wondering what all the 31 hubbub is about.  Read this.

31 days wide

About 30 seconds after meeting Tracie, she gave me a delicious piece of chocolate.  I instantly thought–“now this lady knows what life is all about.”  And then the next time that I saw her was at our first Mom Life meeting (Mom Life is a local group for moms of young children) and she gave everyone in our group little journals with our names on them.  I know I’ve mentioned before but my love language is gifts.  I’d only talked to this lady twice in my life and both times she’d given me something—what was not to love?!

But in all seriousness, even though I have only known her for about a month and a half, I can tell that she has a joyful heart and a positive spirit.  This year is my third year to be in Mom Life and the  past two years I have had great mentor moms.  These ladies love God, they love their family and they are eager to share their wisdom, compassion and grace to the moms in the group.  I am so grateful that they take time out of their busy lives to bless the new moms in our community.

This year was the first year for Tracie to be a mentor mom and so I was excited to get to talk to her because, unlike a lot of the people who I’ve interviewed, I didn’t really know any of the responses that she might have.  I called her on the phone and she told me a little bit about her family.  She met her husband, Kevin, in high school her senior year and they were married 32 years ago this past Thursday.  When they were married, she was a freshman in college at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.  Tracie is originally from Napoleon, Ohio (close to Toledo).  **We will do our best not to focus on the fact that she is a Buckeye. We will not hold that against her.**  With their daughter and three sons, she and her husband moved to Indiana (aka ‘saw the light’) in 1998.  🙂

And, of course, I asked her my line-up of the usual questions.

What is your middle name?  “Lyn”  I had no idea this was such a common middle name.  I may have to do a little chart at the end of the month that graphs out everyone’s responses 🙂

Have you taken a personality test?  “oh sure.  I’ve done the DISC one.  I was highly interactive.  And, of course, the animal one–I am an otter.”  What is the animal one?  “lions–in charge, otter–likes to party, golden retriever–calm&compassionate, beaver–hard working.  I was a little golden retriever, but mostly an otter.  I like to have fun.”  I’ve never heard of DISC.  I’ll have to check that out.  Do you have siblings?  “yes. two brothers and a sister.  I have an older brother and sister and then my brother and I were the babies which is why I’m an otter :)”

What is your favorite song right now?  “I love songs.  Every song that comes on the radio I love, but the past few months I’ve really like Matthew West’s ‘Hello My Name Is’.  I love the words that we are not defined by our past but we are His child.”

Tell me something interesting about the last movie you watched.  “I don’t watch many movies.  I did see Despicable Me 2 at the drive-in.  I love Gru.  He’s so endearing.”  Oh Gru….he’s havin a bad bad day.  We love him, too.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?  “a teacher.  I played school and was bossy.”  And then you became a teacher and homeschooled your children, right?  “yes, I love teaching.”  ….Tracie really is amazing.  She homeschooled her kids for 22 years.  She was homeschooling before it was the cool thing to do.

Where were you and what were you doing 10 years ago?  “well my daughter graduated in 2004 so it was my last year of teaching all four of my kids.  I was teaching them full-time and now my youngest just graduated in 2012.”  Now I think she is enjoying being a grandma.  She has 3 grandbabies and one more getting ready to join the world at the beginning of November.  yay!

What has been your favorite vacation?  “going to Lake James with my whole family.  We’ve done it for the past four or five years.”

What vacation exceeded your expectations?  “probably our first trip to Lake James.  We had never done a vacation with all of the kids after they had been married and you never know if something like that will work out.  So I had reservations, but I loved it and it is my favorite……..and one more, when my youngest turned 6 we went to Disney.  We aren’t big Disney people and so I didn’t expect us to love it as much as we did.  Everyone had a great time.”  There is something about Disney…you just can’t go there and be sad.

What is your current hobby?  “cookie making.  I love to create and do press and bake cookies.”  I’ve seen the pictures on facebook. Your work is amazing!  How long have you had a cookie business?  “one year.”  What?!  “yeah I just decided that I would like to try it and so I watched a lot of youtube tutorials and gave it a go…and I do love to scrapbook and read.”  Seriously, people. Her cookies are amazing.  I haven’t had one, but I’ve heard they are great.  Check her out on facebook:  Tracie’s Sweet Boutique.

What are you reading right now?  What’s It Like To Be Married To Me? by Linda Dillow.  It is very convicting.”  I’ll say.  I should probably read that.

What has been your most life changing moment?  “Besides my salvation, in my 20’s rededicating my life and really understanding that commitment to Christ.  And then getting married and having children and their graduations and grandchildren.  I don’t know…life is always changing.  God takes your breath away.”  Oh I love that!  He really does, doesn’t He?  ‘God takes your breath away.’  I love that.  Life is not boring.  “No it isn’t if you are willing to live it.”

Finish this sentence.  Before I die, I want to “continue living each day as if it were my last…continue seizing the day.”

Thanks, Tracie, for the lovely talk!  It was so nice to get to know a little more about you and I can’t wait to get to know you more over the next few months.  Do you have a mentor mom in your life?  I am so thankful for these ladies that give of their time and talents.

Tomorrow I’ll introduce you to another lady that gives of her time and she is a teacher, too!  I can’t wait to tell you more about my friend Lindsey…aka Mrs. Fry.
