Welcome! If you’re wondering what all the 31 hubbub is about. Read this.
She doesn’t like to be in the spotlight. I told her that no one will be reading this little blog anymore on day 15. I don’t think she believed me but I’m pretty stubborn so I made her answer my questions. I may have even promised to use a pseudonym when talking about her. So, let’s pretend her name is Bridget. And if you honor her by not reading any further, I won’t be offended. It is the way she would want it. But, if you’re a crazy rebel and curious to know more, you will have the privilege to learn about someone who I love dearly and who I really admire.
She is my cousin, but more importantly, she is my friend. I was there when she was married. She and Rob were married at a small country church with just a handful of people. Seriously…maybe even less than 10 people were there. But it was one of the most romantic weddings I have ever attended and I remember thinking—oh that is what love looks like. I knew I would not get married unless I found a love like that.
I was there when she had her first child. And while I’m sure it wasn’t the best of times for
Danielle, I mean Bridget, the rest of us had a ton of fun watching mystery science theater 3000 on tv and laughing hysterically at her youngest brother who was on a serious caffeine high. (who knew hospital cappuccinos had so much caffeine?!)
I have watched her raise her three kids through the preschool years and on into elementary and junior high. She has two boys and a girl just like I do and she is just a few steps ahead of me in life. I know that if life gets crazy, I can talk to her and she’ll get it. She isn’t in the middle of where I am and so she can make me laugh at any given situation. At the same time, she isn’t too far removed that she isn’t sympathetic. Oh and she is great about passing down the clothes—yay! 🙂
I love when our families get together. We play games and end up in tears from laughing so hard and my kids adore their older cousins. I am so thankful for the memories that we are creating. The past few years we’ve started a tradition of getting together on New Year’s Day. It is one of my favorite days of the year. She is the best hostess and so welcoming to all of the crazy people in her family 🙂

We were at a family reunion recently when I forced her to answer a few questions for me.
What is your middle name? “Catherine” Is it spelled with a C or a K? “C, I think.” You think? haha! “well, I usually ask my mom, but I’m pretty sure it is a C.” alright, well we’ll go with a C then.
How did you and Rob meet? “at the Y. He worked front desk and I was in childcare. I was 16 and he was 19 and I had a crush.” I did not know that! So how old were you when you were married? “I was 22, I think. August 22, 1997.”
Where did you grow up? “I was born in Muncie, but then we moved to California when I was 3. And then we moved back my freshman year.”
Where did you go to school? “I went to a private school K-8 grade. It was the same 24 people. And then moving here there were 400 people in my class. It was a huge change. But people still knew I was the girl from California.” I think she must have had the look. Besides, people from california have much nicer tans than people from Indiana.
Have you ever taken a personality test? “didn’t you make me take one once?” Oh that’s right, I did! Do you remember the results? “I think it said I was boring.” whatever. She is far from boring. Quiet does not equal boring.
(My husband interjects and asks her favorite color. “brown” Brown, really? “see I told you I was boring!” I then told him he could stay and listen but to stop asking the questions!)
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? “I wanted to work with Shamu. And then I found out that you had to be a marine biologist and that was out. I don’t understand what the big deal is! How much schooling does it take to stand there, hold the ball and blow the whistle that makes no noise?” hahha! I don’t know. I think you’d be a great ball holder for Shamu!
What is your favorite song right now? “fire and rain” I’ve watched her go through fire and rain in her life. She does it with grace, compassion and strength.
Tell me something interesting about the last movie you watched. “Now You See Me. well the ending was surprising..at least it was to me.” Ok I just watched the trailer and this movie looks Good! I’m thinking the ending might surprise me, too. I’ll have to see it to know 🙂
What were you doing 10 years ago? “well I just had the two boys and I was babysitting. I guess I was just trying to survive day-to-day life with a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old.” oh how I get that. “and taking care of Rob.” (I start laughing.) “anyone who knows Rob will laugh at that…” 😀
What’s been your favorite vacation? “going to Cancun in college. we got to climb the mayan pyramids before they were shut down and I went snorkeling.” wait, was this the trip where the kids would run up and down the pyramid steps and try to sell you stuff? “yes, they would clip bracelets on your hands and then say ‘one dollar, one dollar’…and you’re like, no! I don’t want a bracelet. But it is already on your hand.” So you climbed the pyramids with your arms up in the air? “yeah basically.”
What vacation exceeded your expectations? “probably the one in 2011. our cabin in the woods vacation.” Yeah we had beautiful weather and then you guys got the hottest week of the year. “yes and there was no air conditioning. and I’m not really a woods girl. So the kids would ask if they could have another pudding cup and I would say yes, just eat it! Whatever we have to do to survive!” oh my goodness…hahahha! “and of course then we went to the amusement park and it was really hot and sunny and Rob spent $60 on hats that the kids refused to wear. Except Olivia…she’s a daddy’s girl.” oh man, that’s priceless. I love your stories. “yes, that vacation made for the best memories. And we still have the hats.”
What’s your current hobby? “running” How far do you run each day? “3 miles” What’s the furthest you’ve run? “15 miles” You’re a rock star.
What are you reading right now? “the notebook”
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you. “Well I’m really good at telling people what words mean based on the sentence they’re in. But, really, I have no vocabulary. If something is nice. I just say nice.” Danielle, that is shocking. I am shocked. Between that and your favorite color being brown, I’m not sure I will be able to sleep at night over being so shocked.
What has been your most life changing moment? “having kids, but really when you have that second one. You can’t comprehend how you’ll love two but then you realize that your love isn’t divided, it just grows.” I think that is one of the amazing miracles of life.
If you weren’t afraid, what would you do? “write a novel” You would be a Great story-teller! I told her she should do it. She could even use a different name!
Finish this sentence. Before I die, I want to “raise my kids to be active participants….run a marathon….be better at answering blog questions.” oh danielle. I mean bridget. I think you have done just fine.
And so that was a little bit about my beautiful, sweet and funny cousin. Tomorrow is Day 16 and this adventure will be over half way completed!
