Stephanie Lynne Baumgartner had been an acquaintance of mine for about 4 years before we became friends.  Over the past 2 years, based on little circumstances–our boys’ tball team, our boys being classmates and being in Bible study together, we have gotten to know each other better.  It is amazing to me how God brings people into your life.  I must say, I’m a little jealous of anyone who has been her friend longer than I have–she is that fantastic of a person.

She is, in no particular order:  cheerful, caring, giving, a great listener, compassionate, an awesome mom of 3 boys, a loving wife, a great baker, encouraging, kind, funny, beautiful, wise, and sincere.

Steph always has a smile on her face and when she asks you how your day is, she really wants to know.  She has a wonderful gift of saying the right words or doing the right thing at just the right moment when you might need encouragement.  She once slipped me a piece of paper with some kind words on it.  They were just what I needed to read at that time.  And she will at random times tell me how nice I look….and it is usually on a day when I’m not feeling particularly nice looking.  Kind words from a friend really last.

I asked her if I could interview her for my blog and she was one of the people who said, “Oh I’m not very interesting.”  And then she relented but added, “After the interview, it will be ok if you decide to change your mind.”  Which made me laugh 🙂  I believe that Steph is able to see other people as unique and wonderful in God’s eyes….and I believe she is no less unique and wonderful in His eyes.

Steph was born and raised in Bluffton and then went on to school at Indiana University.  After two years at IU, she transferred to Purdue where she met her husband.  They have been married for 14 years this October and they have three very handsome boys.  She is a dietician, a lactation consultant, an Usborne book consultant, and I think she even teaches classes at the local Y.  She is amazingly talented.

I cornered her at her garage sale this past weekend and asked her a few questions.

What’s your personality profile…other than being the opposite of me?  “I know I’m an E (extrovert) and I think an S (sensing)…I don’t remember the other two.  I have an older brother by 6 years so I’m kind of baby/first-born/only child.”  Ok ok.  I won’t try to peg you down.  What is your love language/spiritual gift?  “words of affirmation.  but now with kids, acts of service and quality time.  And compassion and mercy.”  We are total opposites.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?  “I was in love with Mary Lou Retton.  From about age 4-11, I took gymnastics.  Later I wanted to be a marine biologist.”  I’m sure you would have been an awesome gymnast.  (If only I could have got her to do a cartwheel.)

What has been your favorite vacation?  “Last year, our trip to Ireland.  I love to travel.  Also, before we had kids we took one and a half weeks and took a road trip.  Colorado to Washington State and on the way back we stopped at a friend’s wedding.”

What vacation exceeded your expectations?  “Ireland.  I didn’t know what to expect.  Did you know, in Ireland, sheep outnumber people some crazy number like 3 to 1?”  No.  that I did not know.

Where were you 10 years ago?  “I was working doing nutrition education for WIC and also a breastfeeding program.  We were teased about being DINKS.”  What is that?  “double income no kids”  that. is hilarious.  “but about that time we were returning from a trip where I got pregnant with Samuel.”  alrighty then 🙂  Samuel is her oldest son.

What is your favorite song right now?  “build your kingdom here by rend collective experiment.  it has a fun beat, don’t you think?”  She ran and got her laptop so that she could tell me the name of the song.  And so I could hear it.     —And this music video is cuh-razy.  I kind of love it.

What is your current hobby?  “exercise.  is that a hobby?”  yes.  “raising the boys.”  that’s not a hobby.  “right, ok, I’m learning a lot about photography and also I love to cook.”  She is a great cook and photographer.  “Exercise, Photography and Cooking–three things that I’ve always loved.”

What book are you reading right now?  “well I’m probably the last person to read it, but I just finished reading Redeeming Love.  I learned a lot.”  that book has a lot to teach.

What is one thing that people would find surprising about you?  (she can’t think of anything and asks her husband.)  “what is surprising about me?  Like do I pick my nose and wipe it on the walls?”  (he says, well if you do, I’d be surprised.)   lol!  “I don’t know.  I sing really loud in the car.  I once ran over a small tree in Chicago because I was gawking at the Christmas lights.”  Oh stephanie.  That doesn’t really surprise me.  hahahha!  🙂

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?  “bungee jump”

What’s been your most life changing moment?  “I guess my walk with God, although it hasn’t really been a moment but more of a process.  Especially over the past few years.”

Finish this sentence.  Before I die, I want to “see my children come to Jesus.  and hold my grandbabies.”

Isn’t she the best?  If you haven’t met Stephanie, I hope your paths cross one day.  She’s a pretty special lady.

Tomorrow, I’ll be telling you about another reluctant interviewee (my blog, I can make up words if I want to).  Come back to read about my friend, Julie.

  1. I knew she was a closet nose picker! Ha ha. I might have snorted reading that. I also must say that I love that song too! I am not a musical person but, I just watched that video (twice!). That is Riley’s song for tap this year.

  2. This is all so true about Steph…one time I had to make a cake for a wedding shower, it was a complete disaster…I was talking to her on the phone and she said “Come over and we can bake it here…then she frosted it and it looked professional. She saved the day!! Love her and her serving heart.

penny for your thoughts...
