day twenty-six: monica

Welcome!  If you’re wondering what all the 31 hubbub is about.  Read this.

31 days wide

The last thing she said to me before I hung up the phone was, “Give the kids a hug.”  She loves them and they adore their Nana.  Of course, her real name is Monica Kay Maggard but I think she’s pretty happy to be Nana to a lot of little people.  Monica and Bud (my husband’s dad) will have been married for 25 years this coming January.  Our family loves visiting them at the campground every summer and spending a few days with them in the winter over Christmas break.  The kids talk about it for days.  Nana always has the best juice boxes and the best snacks.  Nana’s house is a fun place with lots of cousins to play with, fun toys and yummy food.  I love that my children are growing up with these memories because it reminds me of my childhood at my grandma’s home.

Monica and I share a love of reading and we both love to watch cooking shows.  Neither of us are big talkers (you don’t have much choice when married to a Maggard) and so I was glad when she agreed to let me interview her.  Here are some of her answers to my questions.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Where did you grow up?  “Kokomo, born and raised….except for going to Florida for lots of vacations!”  Monica loves the beach….and what’s not to love?

Where did you go to school?  “We lived in Galveston when I was little and I went to first and second grade there.  Then we moved to Kokomo and I went to Taylor and graduated from there.”  She mentioned later that she also went to beauty school and worked at a beauty shop before she started working at Delco.  I didn’t know that about her….I love learning new things about people in these interviews!

When you were little, what did you want to be?  “a nurse”  Why?  “I just wanted to wear those cute little uniforms they used to wear.”  That made me laugh:)  “And the nurses were always nicer than the doctors and were more of a mother figure…made you feel more comfortable.”

Have you taken a personality test?  “I did one for fun back when I was working.  I think I was an ISFJ.  I know I was an I and a J.”  I’m an I and a J, too.  There’s nothing wrong about that!  How many siblings do you have?  “I’m the oldest and I have two younger brothers and a younger sister.”  Yay for being the oldest!

Tell me something interesting about the last movie you watched.  “Bud and I watched Just Go With It.  He really likes that movie and so we’ve seen it two or three times.  It has Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in it and it is funny.”  I now get where my husband gets his thing of watching movies over and over again.

What were you doing 10 years ago?  “I retired in ’01 and it was our second year at the campground.  I wasn’t helping out with the girls yet because they were still with a babysitter.  So I guess I was just enjoying my new retirement.”  Sounds nice to me!

What’s been your favorite vacation?  “I took a trip with Chris and my friend and her daughter to Acapulco once.  But I think my favorite vacation is the first time Bud and I went to Florida together.  He planned the trip and surprised me.  He even bought the plane tickets and he doesn’t like to fly so it really was a surprise.”

What trip has exceeded your expectations?  “Well I’d say that Florida trip because I didn’t expect Bud to fly.”  Ok so what did you love about Acapulco?  “I just loved the beaches and the food.  And just seeing a different culture and how other people live.”

What is your current hobby?  “Crocheting”  How long have you crocheted?  “Oh…30 years.”  Oh wow, I thought it was something you just started.  “No, I do it more in the winter when I can’t be outside.  I really love to sit outside and read, too, but it is too cold now.  So right now I’m crocheting a blanket and baby sweater for Tammy.”  I did not know she was expecting!!  “Yeah, they were surprised, too.  She’s due in December.”  Tammy is her younger sister.

What book are you reading right now?  “My friend’s (Suzi Kuntz) brother has a book out called Vain Innocence.  It is about a german girl during WWII and her experiences.  It is a quick read but pretty good.”  That sounds very intriguing.

What is your favorite song right now?  “It has been my favorite song for a while.  God Gave Me You by Blake Shelton.  It is my ringtone for when Bud calls.  And I also really like the song 10,000 Reasons.”

If you weren’t afraid, what would you do?  “go back to school”  What scares you about school?  “all of the technology now.  I don’t think I could keep up.”  This coming from the lady that knows more about smart phones than I do.

What’s been your most life changing moment?  “being a grandparent….you can spoil them and then give them back”

Finish this sentence.  Before I die, I want to “go to Ireland.  I’ve read a lot of books about Ireland and set in Ireland and I just would love to visit.  I want to go to a real Irish Pub with shepherd’s pie and dancing and just see what it’s like.  And I want to see places I’ve read about.  And I love hearing Daniel O’Donnell sing.”

Thanks Monica for sharing a little bit about yourself.  We love you!

Only five more days in the month of October.  Who would be your top 5 people to interview?
