Friday Fun

Dubsmash:  This app has taken over our household.  Thanks Bekah.

*sidenote*  There are two types of people that participate.  Those who want to see themselves being filmed and those who just want you to film them.  I’ll let you guess which one this girl is…

Reading:  A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny

a fatal grace

This is the second book in the Inspector Gamache series.  A good series is perfect for winter reading.

Listening:  all the podcasts all the time.  If you love Downton Abbey, check out the Masterpiece Studio podcast.

A new episode comes out every Monday.  They talk about Sunday’s tv episode and they interview the actors. It is perfectly lovely.

Watching:  Arrow on Netflix.  I marathoned through The Flash like a champ but there was only one season!  Arrow has three so that should hold me for a good week or so 🙂

And also, Car Karaoke with James Corden on Youtube.  I’ve watched them all and want to go on a road trip, like, yesterday.  I told my husband that we should take the kids on a road trip this summer.  It would be so much fun!  And then we drove an hour to Muncie on Sunday and the noise about killed me.  #realitybites

I’ll leave you with this…Happy Friday and Happy Weekend!

Read Watch Listen Follow

I was listening to the podcast Around the Table and they did an episode where they talked about what they have been reading, watching, listening and following…..uh, that’d make a fun blog post to start back up and let you know what’d I’d been up to lately.  Obviously besides listening to podcasts.

also.  my friend is getting married in 54 days and and her shower is in 19 days.  And she’s moving to Canada! So there’s stuff for that.

Ridding my house of fruit flies. I’m currently using something in the kitchen that states to Not use in the kitchen and not to use it where people are going to be living for the next four months.  But it was recommended by a friend and I’m desperate.

Mom Life….gifts and parties.

My baby started kindergarten.  So I’m helping out at the school a lot.

I decided to run a 10K.  Training for that….that’s in two weeks.  Ack!

And I’m doing a craft fair in the middle of October.  Because why not?

Oh and I got the exciting news that I’m going on a trip in April.  To Holland and Belgium!  You know what they have a lot of in Holland, right?  TULIPS!!!  And Belgium has reaaaaallllly good chocolate.  #dreamtrip

So life is full.  And good. It can get stressful…but today is a good day 🙂

Ok here we go–Read Watch Listen Follow.

Read:  Simply Tuesday and, hopefully, this afternoon Go Set a Watchman…I’m nervously excited to read it.  I just need to decide for myself if all the hype is hype or not.  Simply Tuesday is wonderful.  Emily Freeman has a way with words that I am in awe of.

“My part is not feeding five thousand men. My part is giving my lunch to Jesus.”

Watch:  I just finished Friday Night Lights on Netflix.  #timriggins  I was watching this series with my husband, but then I watched one episode while the kids were at school and the next thing I knew I was confessing to him that I was on the last episode (3 seasons later).  So ashamed not ashamed. Stuff gets in my head and during group prayer at Mom Life this morning, my friend prayed that we would have open hearts.  When she said Amen, I felt like we all needed to shout ‘Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose!’.  So maybe I have issues.

Listen: so many podcasts.  A favorite:  Sorta Awesome with Megan Tietz.

What have you been doing?

too many thoughts

I feel like I’ve been gone from blogging for so long and now I don’t know where to start back up.

It has been a nice, unintentional, break. And now I’d like to get back into a routine.

A few things I’ve been up to this past month:

1. I watched Emily’s (from JDC) online blog class. I took a lot of notes and have a lot of ideas and now I need to sit down, watch it again, and get my ideas down on paper.

2. In April, we celebrated my birthday and Miss Emily’s. My baby is now FIVE!! what?!

Emily Birthday

3. Swim lessons have ended and baseball practices have begun.

4. I got an iphone. Huge since, you know, I didn’t even have a cell phone a month and a half ago. This definitely deserves it’s own post. So many thoughts.

5. I’ve read a few (a very very very sad few) books. See #4.

6. We attended Kindergarten Round up for the baby girl. She is ridiculously excited. I am happy that she is and sad because I will MISS her!

7. I went on a field trip with Alex and Ben.

alex's field trip8. I finished a busyman triathlon. I never thought I would be able to say I did a triathlon in any form. It turns out swimming is hard but not impossible for me to do.

9. We got a new couch. It is beautiful.

10. We spent 5 mostly relaxing days in Michigan (a lot of time at the beach–my happy place) for my grandma’s memorial.

grandma's memorialAnd April has now come and gone for another year.  Most of the tulips that I see around town have lost their petals.  And summer is right around the corner.  My kids will be out of school in 3 weeks.  Ready or not 🙂

What were you up to in April?

1.  Today I get to take two boys to school.

2.  Today I get to go exercise at a class led by a good friend.

3.  Today I get to put away three baskets of folded laundry.

4.  Today I get to pick up two boys from school.

5.  Today I get to take two kids to swimming lessons.

6.  Today I get to go celebrate at DQ in honor of Ben finishing another year of scouting.

7.  Today I get to turn another year older.

8.  Today I get to realize that my life is full and overflowing.

Lunch For the People By the People

I decided to let the kids choose their lunch today in a very democratic style.  I wouldn’t vote them down and they each could have two picks.  This could have been a lot of chex mix and donuts, but instead, I was pleasantly surprised with what came home with us.

003And so that’s what we had for lunch today.  Maybe this will become another spring break tradition.  It is a lot less painful for all than swimsuits in the snow.  (and for anyone out of town that cares…the snow is all gone today.)

spring has sprung….or has it?

My kids are out of school this week for spring break.  Last week we had lovely mild spring weather.  They were able to come home from school and go outside and play.  This past weekend we had a ton of fun visiting with friends and they played outside almost the whole day Saturday.

And then Monday hits about midday it started to snow.  Welcome to crazy weather town.  A few years ago during spring break it snowed (I don’t know why we were surprised when it happened again)….(maybe we were more disgusted than surprised)….anyway, I took a picture of my kids out in the snow in their swimsuits.

Here are the pictures from 2013:

015But happiness can turn on a dime…

017And so this year when I showed a picture of my snowy yard to Bekah, she said I should take their pictures again.  And it took a little convincing but the kids agreed to do it.

This time little miss em started out unhappy and then changed her mind.  Take a look:

012After jumping up and down and crying and running inside she then ran back outside and said, “It’s not so bad!”

015And I couldn’t resist taking a little video, too 🙂

So until we decide to head to a warmer climate during spring break, this may just end up being a family tradition.  Alex said next time he’d video tape me out in the snow.  I just laughed at him.

Do you have any fun family traditions?

For the Love of the Flop

Today:  51.  Tomorrow:  54.  Friday:  56.

That is the weather forecast.  And when the temperature is only four degrees away from 60 it is high time the flip-flops are pulled out, dusted off and slid on to your feet.  High time, I tell you….high time!

056The picture above makes me laugh every time I see it.  It is from summer vacation last year.  It was a really windy day and, while walking out to the light house, Emily lost one of her flip-flops.  I wanted to toss the other one away but she acted as if I was committing murder when I suggested it.  So we kept the one lone purple flop.  And we still have it.

I understand her obsession.  I have a great fondness for flip-flops.  They are so comfortable and so easy and effortless to just slip on.  The kids and I are already talking about the five extra minutes of sleep we can get in the morning once the weather warms up because we won’t have to put on coats, shoes and socks.  I am not even kidding.

I never wore flip-flops when I was younger because my toenails were super out of whack.  When I got married (and thus got some great insurance!), I was able to take some medicine and my nails cleared up.  Ever since then, I’ve loved going barefoot and enjoyed wearing sandals for as long as the weather allows (which for me is at about the 50 degree mark).  Two years ago, I had a really bad case of plantar fasciitis and, once again, couldn’t wear my beloved flip-flop.  That was a rough summer…I think for most of us we really take walking without pain for granted.  Last summer, my feet were back to normal and I went back to wearing my many different colored Old Navy flip-flops.  But I don’t want to ruin my feet.  And so, I think the time has come.  I’ve been researching and Chaco sells really great, supportive shoes.  And they have flip-flops.  This is the year that I splurge and break my $2.50 budget and get myself some high quality flip-flops.  My feet will thank me and I will still have the easiness of just slipping on my shoes in the morning.

It is all for the love of the flop…and, you know, the sleep.  Gotta get that extra five minutes in.

Romantic Comedy

Valentine’s Day.  People have really strong feelings about this holiday.  Some love it.  Some hate it.  Some could care less.  It makes some people happy, some people depressed, some people…..well you get the idea.

Confession Time:

One year in college, I got together with a group of single friends on Valentine’s Day to watch Moulin Rouge.  We declared it to be strictly a single ladies only event.  We had a friend that had a boyfriend that went to a college in another state and she wanted to join us.  I’m sure most of the girls would have said it was ok.  But not me.  Oh no.  If I make a rule, I expect it to be followed.  (If it is someone else’s rule and I think it is dumb, that’s another story.)  So I told her it wasn’t happening.  I know.  a little harsh.  Why are girls so mean to each other?  And also, I fell asleep watching the movie.

I am trying to learn from my mistakes.  I tell my kids to always draw your circle wider.  Include the people who don’t fit in, that annoy you, that maybe are even mean.  Bless those that curse you.  Love, love love.  That is, after all, the point of Valentine’s Day, right?  And also, watch movies in the late afternoon…you’re I’m more likely to stay awake that way.

Ok.  So whether you are single or have a special someone, we can all enjoy a good romantic comedy.  My husband and I looked at our movie collection and here are our top ten (five for me and five for him).  I made a rule (see there I go again) that I could veto a movie of his if I didn’t think it fit.  This is a good rule–trust me, I knew what I was doing.  His first question was, “Would you consider Gladiator a romantic comedy?”  dork.

William's romcomsMine:

Rachel's romcomsimportant notes:

1.  We really do own Dan in Real Life–it is just loaned out at the moment.

2.  Yes, that is a VHS of Notting Hill.

3.  The version of Sabrina is the original with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.  (William prefers the newer version with Harrison Ford.  This could be the debate of the century.)

4.  Obviously, we were meant to be since we both picked Return to Me as our #1.

5.  Finally–what are your top 5 favorite rom com movies?

Right Now

This is what’s new.

Reading:  Whistling Past the Graveyard and Year of Wonders:  a novel of the plague.  Both good so far.

Listening:  Ed Sheeran.  on repeat.  maybe because it is Valentine’s week?

Watching:  Season 1 Episode 2 of Sherlock.  What has taken me so long?  I’m going to love this show.

Sewing:  This sewing machine cover.  What mine looks like right now.  I forced myself to use fabric on hand:

Excited:  for our mom life speaker tomorrow.  When you’ve been in a mom group for 8 years (not possible!), it is exciting to hear a brand new speaker.

Planning:  summer vacation.

Amused:  By Emily.  always.  Especially when she secretly gets a hold of my camera.

Loving:  water aerobics class

Wishing:  for spring. and outside running.  and tulips.

I read this post on resolutions and reflections and not letting the present pass you by.  It was good for me.

Such an interesting article.  I think I’ll try it with William on our next date just to make sure.

I lost a month of my life to Gilmore Girls.  Have you binge-watched any of these?

And like I told my friend, Emily, it is Jess-Logan-Dean.
